Introducing Sales Order Agent in Business Central
Automating Sales Orders with AI – My Thoughts on the New Sales Order Agent in Business Central
I recently got the chance to dive into one of the coolest AI features in Dynamics 365 Business Central. It is the Sales Order Agent. I have to say, this is a game-changer for companies dealing with high volumes of customer emails. It also benefits those involved in manual sales processing.
🌍 Now Available in More Regions!
If you’re based in Australia (AU), Canada (CA), Great Britain (GB), New Zealand (NZ), or the United States (US), there’s good news! The Sales Order Agent is now available as a production-ready preview. It was initially rolled out in limited geos, but Microsoft is clearly scaling this up for broader adoption. I’m personally working with teams in Canada, and we’re already planning a pilot rollout.
🤖 What Exactly is the Sales Order Agent?
Think of it as a virtual assistant that lives inside Business Central and automates the boring part of order processing. Here’s what it does:
- Reads and understands customer emails
- Identifies the customer (based on known contacts and email addresses)
- Clarifies ambiguous details by replying to the customer via email (yes, it talks!)
- Checks inventory availability
- Creates a sales quote or order in BC
- Generates a PDF quote/order document if needed
All this is tracked in Business Central — nothing happens in a black box. You can jump in anytime and take over, which is great for maintaining control.
Here’s a quick video demo if you want to see it in action (replace with actual link).
📦 Real Talk: Why This Matters
In my day-to-day, I’ve seen how much time gets eaten up processing sales orders from emails. People are doing copy-paste jobs from Outlook into BC, checking inventory manually, and then sending PDF confirmations. This tool could reduce that from 15-20 minutes per order to just a few seconds — seriously.
It also:
- Reduces data entry errors
- Frees up your sales team to focus on closing, not processing
- Keeps the order lifecycle transparent and auditable
- Helps smaller teams scale like larger ones
💰 New Billing Model to Keep in Mind
Here’s the catch: it’s not free (but still worth it IMO). Microsoft has introduced consumption-based billing, meaning you’re charged based on the number of Copilot Studio messages used for AI interactions.
For anyone doing budgeting or cost analysis, you’ll want to keep an eye on message consumption. You can learn more about that here.
🔧 How to Set It Up
Getting started is pretty simple if you’re already familiar with Business Central configuration. You’ll want to:
- Make sure you’re on the right region and version.
- Follow this guide: Sales Order Agent Overview
- Monitor usage and refine how emails are parsed.
- Train your team to review and confirm actions taken by the agent.
There’s also a release plan to track upcoming features and improvements.
🙋♂️ My Take
This is a feature where AI actually makes your life easier. It does this instead of just adding buzzwords to your tech stack. If you’re a BC consultant or an end user, this is worth exploring. It is also worth exploring if you just love business apps like I do.
I’m personally excited to test it further and maybe even build some custom flows using Power Automate around it. Imagine triggering alerts when a high-value order is placed by the agent — the possibilities are endless.
If you’ve already started using it or have questions about setup, reach out! I’m always down to talk BC.
